Once upon a time in a world where you had to be creative to make a point, the world on the big and little screens were smart, vibrant and iconic. Monsters became a metaphor for the other, the outsider, the forgotten and the voiceless. We'll call this pre-2018. Creativity reined above and beyond. Then something happened. The world woke from it's slumber and dropped it's guard. Metaphors became megaphones and the little mermaid got her voice back. The end...right? Well not really. We'll call that post-2018. As wonderful as it is that people are finally taking responsibility for the world's hurts and insults, our television sucks now.
Having things out in the open is great. It needed to happen, people needed to be held accountable. But the process of breaking down the walls started to break down in general. Shows like Charmed (1998) were dealing with injustices in a smart way using metaphors to do so. Not that I don't love the reboot/spin-off version being able to be bold and straightforward with it's voice, losing it's veil of disguise had caused some to dismiss the first season as under written.
The same can be said about Gossip Girl 2.0. A new vitality has been given to old storylines of teenage life, but it's too in your face no growth approach of woke culture has left it wishy-washy and spineless. But still, it has not hit the bottom of the barrel as much as the long awaited Craft 2 Legacy did in 2020. The original horror film tackled adult situations of greed, abuse, racism and murder in a way that mattered. While it's long overdue sequel got on it's teenage soap box declaring in it's dialog it was for the 'woke'. Thus removing any credibility it might have had. Of which we learned quickly it had none. Craft 2 Legacy didn't even have the decency to make it's characters interesting. It was too busy letting us know it was on a mission of giving a voice to the voiceless that it didn't even do that right. It could have taken some pointers from an episode or two of the law drama Good Fight .A show that's well written, completely aware of it's audience and more "woke" than a gaggle of caffinated geese. Here's a show that uses it's time wisely, educating it's audience while staying on point with it's creativity. Using it's medium to it's advantage with smart, crisp dialog and fleshed out characters while ripping the plots straight from the headlines. Information matters as much as how the medium delivers it.
