It's day 298 of the year and main project. That means, we are sitting on day 25 of the 31 Days of Hallowe'en challenge as well as the #31DayHorrorChallenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street.

As always, I'm starting with my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en, and the theme today is A Bruce Campbell Movie. I picked My Name is Bruce.

When a group of teenagers are killed after accidentally freeing a the spirit of a warrior from an old mine, the one survivor decides to kidnap his favourite movie star Bruce Campbell thinking he will save the town. Little did he know the town now needs to be saved from Bruce.

This is a comedic meta look at all of Bruce Campbell's movies up to that point. Every single film he had done before this one, was some how mentioned with inside jokes. It's a cute, goofy movie that lets Campbell be a bit of a bad guy for most of the movie, before being the reluctant hero.

And the prompt today for the 31 Day Horror challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street is Feels Like a Fairytale. I picked the Company of Wolves.

In the modern day, a teenaged girl has an extremely vivid nightmare about first her sister dying, then her grandmother warning her about the evils of men through various stories about wolves. In the end, the girl finds herself face to face with a large wolf, as it somehow breaks the dream barrier to end up in modern times.

This has always been a weird tale that combines a few other stories. First, the idea of it being a story within a story within a dream, can be a little hard to follow. Then, the fact the sister's name is Alice, and she goes through a Wonderland style patch of forest. The main story within the dream, is of course Red Ridding Hood. I always had the impression the grandmother really hated men, not just warning her of temptation; but outright hating men. There's this creepy scene when the grandmother, having just told her the first story, takes her glasses off and lowers her head just a little and demands a kiss. There's this massive element of something not being what it seems. Which of course, is the running plot with the stories. The movie itself deals with betrayal, greed, lust, desire, and freedom.

I'm posting every day this month for the two challenges, so come back tomorrow and see what's on the slab. If you want to follow along with my daily Letterboxd lists, you can here and here.
