It's Day 292 of the year and main project, which brings us to Day 19 of the 31 Days of Hallowe'en challenge as well as the #31DayHorrorChallenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street.
Today's another day where the two challenges can be done with one movie. So, my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en challenge theme is Isolation Horror. And the prompt for the 31 Day Horror Challenge from Nightmare on Film Street is Based on a Book. I went with The Shining.
When Jack is offered a job as a winter caretaker for a hotel during it's off season, he moves his family. It doesn't take long though for him to start to feel the effects of the isolation, as he begins to see the ghosts around him. Can his family survive the hotel or will they end up joining the hauntings.
Hands down, this is my favourite Stephen King adaptation. And this is one of the few times where the movie was better than the book. We see Jack going rapidly mad, as he deals with the forced isolation and getting sober. You never know if he's really interacting with ghosts or just hallucinating them? The topics of madness, abuse, alcoholism, loneliness and grief/guilt are all touched on in some way or another.
