It's Day 292 on my One Movie a Day for 2023. And it's Day 19 on both my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project, as well as the 31 Days of Horror challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. And I can not forget the 100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge that I joined this year.
It's October 19th. Which means we are 12 days till Hallowe'en, I don't count Hallowe'en itself in the countdown. And normally I would be starting my 13 Days of Hallowe'en, which I would do from the 19th-31st of October. I normally do movie reviews, recipes and comedy skits over my various old social medias, but this year, I've just been keeping it simple and doing the movie challenges and Hallowe'en stuff here on this site and my Letterboxd.
My mini theme for today for my 31 Days of Hallowe'en, is Witches part 1. I picked the movie Coven.
Five members of a coven are trying to bring back to live their ancestor. A very powerful high priestess/god. It can only be accomplished with members of the same family bloodline that had banished her centuries before. Will they be able to survive their attempt, or will the sacrifice be too high.
I really liked this one. It's a 2020 b-horror mix of The Craft and Little Witches, both from 1996, but it does it so well. There are a half dozen movies out with the title of "Coven", so you've got to wade your way through the titles till you get to it, but it's so worth it.
The only downside to this was there are moments when you can not tell who's who. A couple of the actors have such similar looks, you get a bit confused in a few scenes.
The theme for today for the 31 Days Horror Challenge hosted by Nightmare on Film Street is Killer Machines. I picked Maximum Overdrive, by Stephen King.
We open with a screen shot telling us that a comet was over the Earth for a week, then we jump right into traffic stopping, bridges opening, and all sorts of other electrical devices turning on by themselves. As they begin to work on their own, or not work as the case maybe, anything that could be dangerous, becomes a threat to humans and animals, leaving a trail of death. A small group of people working in a truck stop become trapped there as the trucks parked in the lot all come to life and begin to run people over. The group's numbers quickly begin to drop as the trucks kill them off.
Okay, classic from the 1980's with a killer soundtrack by AC/DC. This is pure Stephen King at his best. It makes zero sense but at the same time, it doesn't really need to. It's a nightmare that I'm sure more than a few have had over the decades. I love his ten second cameo at the beginning of the movie as the guy who is trying to use the bank machine.
Come back tomorrow to see what tricks and treats are on the slab.
