Hallowe'en 2023 Day 18- Toni Collette movie and a Foreign Horror

Its Day 291 of my One Movie a Day for 2023, as well as being Day 18 for both my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project and the

31 Day Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. Let's not forget, the 100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge that I joined this year.

This is the paragraph where I let you know that, over the last decade I usually did my 13 Days of Hallowe'en project on my old site and various social medias, which ran from the 19th-31st of October and that it consisted of movie reviews, recipes and comedy skits; but that this year I decided to keep it contained to just this site and my Letterboxd.

My mini theme for today for my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project is Foreign Movies (that meant it could not be a Canadian or American) I picked Killer Mermaid.

We follow a group of friends who are on vacation on a remote fishing island. They hear about an old abandoned area and decide to go there, even though the locals tell them about the tragic past of the area. Once there, they are separated and hunted by some unknown sea creature.

Okay, so this was part folk story and part slasher. We've got the vicious blood thirsty siren luring and killing her victims, all the while a guy is stalking and killing people with a hook. We find out they are connected, but it's a really great red herring- pardon the pun- as you're not sure what's suppose to be real. I really enjoyed this take on the slasher genre as well as on the monster genre.

The mini theme today for the 31 Day Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street is a Toni Collette movie. I went with the 2011 remake of Fright Night.

Charlie believes his new next door neighbour, Jerry is a vampire. No one seems to believe him as the locals start to go missing. It isn't until his girlfriend Amy and his mom become targets that those around him start to trust his theory. He hires occult expert Peter Vincent to help him battle not just Jerry, but the nest of vampires he's creating.

Toni Collette plays the mother in this movie, and has a substantial part throughout. This is the first of two remakes, and the 3rd movie in the franchise.

I feel this movie's only downside is the CGI. It really dates it for that mid-2000's era. The acting is great, the fact they changed the location to be Las Vegas works well, but the sfx just bog it down. Any movie that was done between 2004-2012 will have that issue.

Come back tomorrow and see what other tricks and treats are on the slab.
