2024 Hallowe'en Movie Challenge Day 19

It's day 293 of the year and the project, which means we've made it to Day 19 of the 31 Days of Hallowe'en challenges. As always, I'm starting with my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en. And I've talked about it back in August. The mini theme today is Ghost. I picked Poltergeist.

When a family start to experience paranormal activity, they discover a portal to another dimension. Before long, their youngest child is pulled into the portal, and it will take everything they have to get her back.

Not the first ghost movie, but by far the most well known. I was eight when this movie first came out at cinemas, and vividly remember it being on television not too long after as a world wide event (okay more like a Canadian and American television event) We even had a copy in our family collection for years on VHS. All these years later, it's still one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen. Not only do you have a really great introduction to the paranormal, with a very clear inspiration from the real life Warrens; it's one of the best metaphor's for grief. When you strip away the paranormal aspects of this, at it's core, it's a story about a family who's dealing with an abducted child, and you can easily swap out the paranormal group for a group of detectives, having the same emotional results.

And the 31 Days of Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. Their theme of the day is Possessed. I picked Prey for the Devil.

A young nun wants to become an exorcist, but is at first denied because only men are allowed. After forming a connection with a child who's become possessed, her superiors have no other choice but to allow her to enter the training to become an exorcist. Along the way, she learns the reason she's been able to connect with the little girl is because this is the child she had given up for adoption years before becoming a nun.

I really liked this movie. It got a little predictable with the adoption part of the story, but otherwise, I felt it handled the topic better than most in the genre. It focuses more on the equality or lack of, facing women in that religion, giving it some grounding in the real world.

Again, this is one of those days, where at the time I was picking the films, I was just picking them for the daily mini themes. But, as I write this little article/mini review, I realize they both have an underlining theme of women fighting for their child. Of the strength and sacrifice that a mother will go through to keep her kids safe.

Don't forget to check out my daily Letterboxd lists, as I am doing a few horror movie challenge this month. #100HorrorMoviesIn92Days

Come back tomorrow to see what I pick for the next round.
