It's day 300 of the year and the main project. Which means, we are at Day 26 of the 31 Days of Hallowe'en challenge. As always, I'm starting off with my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en, which I talked about back in August. Today's mini theme is Rock n Roll. I picked Shock 'Em Dead aka Rock em Dead.
After being bullied by his landlord, his coworkers and the band members of a local metal band, Martin Angel makes a deal with a demon. His soul to become the world's greatest guitar player.
This is a classic always read the fine print and be careful what you wish for story. The lead character is so fed up with the way his life is going, that he literally sells his soul for rock n roll. He then finds himself having to feed on the souls of others. Yep, it's a vampire story.
It's got a condensed timeline of about 72 hours, from the time Martin tries out for the band, to the time things go horribly wrong. After he signs away his soul, he's given everything he's ever wanted, the talent, the groupies and the house. He changes his name to Angel Martin, and takes over the band. But, he's still not happy. Lusting after the girlfriend of his band mate, he tries to perform the same voodoo ritual on her that he did himself, only it doesn't go as planned.
Greed plays a big theme in this. The idea that no matter how much some people have, they just never see it as enough.
And the 31 Days of Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. Their theme today is Alfred Hitchcock. I picked The Birds.
When a young woman is asked to deliver some pet birds from the local pet shop, she finds herself having to do so out of town. After arriving at the little fishing village, she is oddly attacked by a seagull. She soon invites herself into the lives of the locals, and the town becomes the new nesting area for thousands of bloodthirsty birds. Can she and the others survive the night?
Birds are vicious creatures. I get why this is considered a horror film. I don't know if I would sit through this again? It's pacing at times feels not just slow, but almost at a standstill. There's character development and then there is just dragging a scene on too long. This at times, does that, drags.
Don't forget to check out my daily Letterboxd lists, as I am doing more than a few movie challenges this year. The #100HorrorMoviesIn92Days is one of them. I'll have an update in a few days on that one.
Come back tomorrow to see what's on the slab.
