It's day 299 of my One Movie a Day for 2023, and it's Day 26 of both my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project, as well as the 31 Days of Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. And I can not forget to mention the 100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge that I joined this year.
This is usually where I've been telling you about how over the last decade, on my old social medias, I've done a 13 Days of Hallowe'en project that ran from the 19th-31st of October, where I would do movie reviews, recipes and comedy skits. But this year, I'm keeping it simple just doing the project on this site and my Letterboxd.
Today's mini theme for my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project is The 2000's. I ended up going with Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday The Thirteenth.
We follow a group of students as they try to avoid a masked killer.
So this is a spoof of both Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. It's, I think, a much better spoof than some of the other ones that were being done at the time. It also brings in two cast members from the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer in Julie Benz and Danny Strong. Both having worked on the series and able to balance the horror elements with the comedic timing with ease.
The mini theme for today on the 31 Days of Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street is Haunted Hotel. I picked The Innkeepers.
On the last weekend before going out of business, the staff at a hotel decide to dig into the local legend surrounding the many deaths that happened there. With the help of a former actor turned medium, the two staff members on shift begin to experience the unexplained.
I was very surprised with how well this was done. It does take a while to really get into the ghost hunting part of it, but once it does, it makes you want to learn more. They sadly don't go into enough back story for me, but the setting of the hotel is beautiful. I did however, like the fact they kept the cast small. There are only about ten core cast members throughout the film, and it really plays into the idea of being isolated in a haunted building.
Come back tomorrow to see what other tricks and treats I've got on the slab.
