It's Day 278 of my One Movie a Day for 2023, it's also Day 5 of my 31 Days of Hallowe'en. As well as being Day 5 of the 31 Day Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. And lets not forget the 100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge. I had joined that one back in August.
The mini theme for my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en today is Ed Wood Style/Era. I've talked before about how in the last decade, I've done a 13 Days of Hallowe'en on my various social medias consisting of movie reviews, comedy skits and recipes. I almost always dedicated them to Ed D Wood Jr, because well; my comedy skits seem to remind people of that low grade style. And I will wear that like a crown and badge of honor. I picked Face of the Screaming Werewolf as my selection for this one. It was one that I hadn't heard of before, and actually, had watched a few days ago with the plan of using it for the day one theme of black and white monster movie. Only, it didn't really work. But, less than five minutes into Face of the Screaming Werewolf, I knew it was perfect for this category.
There's honestly, not much plot here as it's a bit of a stitched job. Deleted and unfinished footage from other movies were edited together to form this movie. Two mummies are unearthed in a temple, one of which is actually a werewolf. The mummy-mummy stalks a few people and then gets killed, while the werewolf gets kidnapped.
That's it. There really isn't much going on here and it only clocks in at 60 minutes. I don't really know what I was expecting from this? The short run time isn't that surprising for a movie from that timeframe. Most only ran about 75 minutes. Even for a movie from an era when they used stock footage and re-edited deleted scenes from other movies together all the time, this really has no connecting thread.
Day 5 of the 31 Day Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street is Schoolhouse Screams. I ended up going with Ghoulies 3 Ghoulies Go To College.
We open with a student years before opening a portal to hell via the toilet. He is quickly killed by three small demon like creatures before they return back down the portal with him. Fast forward to what is suppose to be present day, and a student finds a comic book buried in a crack in the wall of the bathroom. He takes the book to class with him, only to have his professor steal it. Quickly the professor realizes it's actually a really magick spell and preforms the ritual. He summons the ghoulies to his side once again through the toilet portal, and begins to use their power for himself. Killing everyone who gets in his way. While all this is going on, the students are having prank week, so much of the demonic destruction is ignored as pranks.
Well...I've seen worse. This is less of a horror and more of a gross out. I was bored through this. It wasn't horror enough for me nor did I find anything in it funny. Even if they had boosted the occult sup-plot a little more, it would have been more my speed. But, sadly in my opinion, they focused too much on the drunken pranks being pulled.
Come back tomorrow for more tricks and treats.
