Today is Day 293 of my One Movie a Day for 2023, and Day 20 of both my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project, as well as the 31 Days of Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. And we can not forget the 100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge I joined this year.
As always, this is the part where I tell you that for the last decade, I have been doing my 13 Days of Hallowe'en on my old various social medias, which ran from the 19th-31st of October, and consisted of movie reviews, recipes and comedy skits. But this year, I've kept it simple just on this site and my Letterboxd.
My own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project mini theme for today is Witches part 2. I decided to go with the horror comedy Elvira Mistress of the Dark.
After learning that her great aunt has just died, Elvira goes to the reading of the will. When she arrives in the small town, she finds herself the center of attention for all the wrong reasons, as well as having to deal with her uncle. She learns that her family are actually a long line of witches, and ends up in a battle for control of the family's grimoire. With the whole town out to get her, can she survive long enough to collect her part of the inheritance and get to her next gig in Las Vegas?
Okay, so this is one of my all time favourite movies. I think over the decades I've seen this nearly a thousand times by now. I've not only talked about this movie on my old social media a ton, I made recipes inspired by it way back almost a decade ago.
This is a hyper version of her horror host character. They literally start the movie with her doing her hosting job for I believe Forbidden Planet, and getting the news that first her next gig is in danger of falling through, and then the dead aunt. So many jokes and puns that made complete sense back in the 1980's, that I've seen go over people's heads now who are just too young to get the references. It's sad what's happened to pop culture, but that's another rant for another day.
It follows a fairly typical formula, set up the outcast in the fish out of water segment, introduce the love interest, introduce the rival for the love interest, introduce the villain, and have our hero in grave danger. And then there is the big song and dance at the end.
The mini theme for 31DayHorrorChallenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street is Freddy Krueger. I picked A Nightmare on Elm Street 5 Dream Child.
After having been bested by Alice and her newly found abilities, it seems like Freddy has disappeared for good. Only, he starts suddenly showing up while Alice and her friends are awake. Alice soon learns that she's about to have a baby, and Freddy has begun targeting the unborn child while it sleeps. His plan is to possess the baby, take over it's soul and be reborn in human form. Can the remaining Elm Street survivors finally defeat him?
This really digs into the idea of how scary being a mom truly is, and how children are leeches. At least, that's what I came away from this with. We learn about Freddy's relationship with his mother, and how he was conceived; which was brutal and unwanted.
Then it gets odd. Our hero has to join forces with the ghost of Freddy's mother in order for him to be taken back to the other side. It's done in both the dream dimension and in a weird history time loop that you can't really explain because it makes no sense even for a dream world.
It brings up the idea of how early does a human become a human, and what point does the soul enter into things?
Come back tomorrow to see what kind of tricks and treats I have on the slab.
