It's Day 279 of the year and my projects, which means we are at Day 5 of the 31 Days of Hallowe'en challenges. First up is my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en challenge, which I talked about back in August. My theme today is Graveyard Scene. And I picked Cemetery Man.
A cemetery caretaker's real job is to be a vampire hunter and keep the undead from eating the living.
That's it. That's the story in a nutshell. The opening scene has him explaining that he has no idea why or how it happens, or if any other graveyard in the world has this undead issue? You spend from the middle of the movie onward wondering if it's real or all in his head, as it's shot with increasing moments of distorted view points. He keeps meeting the same woman in different forms, and having to kill her. You're left wondering if she's real, imagined from his guilt, or triplets or what? It was very Hitchcock-Vertigo like. In fact, this is the perfect cross between Vertigo and Evil Dead.
Next up, is the 31 Days of Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. Their mini challenge today is Jordan Peele movies. I went with Nope.
A set of siblings are on the brink of loosing their ranch when it becomes known a UFO is circling the area. They try to capture proof on tape, causing a few people close to them to get killed.
I'm not the biggest Jordan Peele fan. I thought Us was really good, mostly because it was different; and I liked his remake of Candyman. And I just did not care at all for Get Out. Nope left me somewhere between liking it and scratching my head as to why he made it? I get that all his works have a social commentary, but he could have stripped away the sci-fi/horror of this and done a straight up drama about a family and their issues. It would have worked just as well. The sci-fi/horror element takes you into this debate on science vs religion, which almost feels disjointed to the rest of the film. I walked away from this one wondering if it was meant to be done in the same style as From Dusk till Dawn was? As in, half is one genre midway mark another genre? Only, it doesn't actually do that.
Don't forget, I'm also taking part in the #100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge as well. You can follow along with me daily on my Letterboxd.
I'll be back tomorrow with the next round of spooky movies.
