It's day 285 of the year and my project, which means it's Day 11 of the 31 Days of Hallowe'en movie challenges. I'm once again starting with my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en challenge, which I talked about back in August. Today's mini theme is Slasher from the 2010's. I picked the movie Lost After Dark.
A group of high school kids skip their school dance and steal a school bus in order to spend the weekend at the family camp. Halfway there, the bus breaks down and they are forced to spend the night on an old farm. Unknown to them, a cannibal is stalking the grounds.
This is a 2013 (depending on what listing you have. The movie's end credits have it as 2013, but it's listed online as both 2014 and 2015) Canadian slasher designed to look like a horror from the mid-80's. I have to admit, I'd never heard of this before today, and it ended up being one of the better slasher's I've seen in a long time. They nailed the hair and wardrobe although the make-up for a few of the female characters was a little on the soft/muted side to pass for a real 1980's look. But, otherwise, this even went so far as to add "vcr tracking and old film pops" to make it look like it was on an old VHS tape. It even has a bit of a twist, as you are following one character for the first hour of the movie, therefore you think they are going to be the final character, but they are not.
And the 31 Days of Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. Their mini challenge today is Nicolas Cage Horror. I picked Renfield.
After being the slave of Dracula for over a hundred years, Renfield decides to move away from what is clearly an abusive relationship. Along the way, he helps a cop bring down a major drug dealer, but has to pay the consequences.
So, I've talked a bit about this movie before when it first came out. It's easily one of my favourite Cage roles, right next to his 1989 Vampire's Kiss. He's gone from playing the Renfield type character in that, to playing Dracula in this, and he's perfect for it. I would love to see a sequel to Renfield and would love to see Cage play Van Helsing in another vampire movie.
Don't forget to check out my daily movie challenges all October on my Letterboxd. I'm doing the #100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge as well.
Check back tomorrow to see what I've picked for the next round.
