I wrote in my last article/post about the Hallowe'en season. In particularly, the four movie challenges that I am taking part in this year. At the time of writing this, I have just reached Day 242 of the Movie a Day challenge; which puts the calendar at 242 days into 2023 (that is a general movie challenge and you can check that out here).

What did I get surprised by? What was I disappointed by? I was surprised by My Bloody Valentines 3D, Blood Quantum, Riding the Bullet, Cooties, Jaws and Jaws 2. I was disappointed by Subspecies 5 Blood Rise, Scooby-Doo Stage Fright and Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom. Everything else was what I pretty much expected it to be. Here's a few thoughts on my top disappointment and my top happy surprise.
Subspecies 5 Blood Rise, was one movie I had been looking forward to for years. It's been about fifteen years since the last installment of the franchise, and there is a lot of fan anticipation attached to it. But, for me, it just fell flat. This has always been a top franchise in the vampire genre and the horror genre in general for me. But I found Blood Rise, which is a prequel, just suffered in trying to find it's footing. You can tell it was done with the intention of it being another stepping stone in the franchise. To put it simply, I feel it had too much weight on its shoulders and not enough room to breathe. Had the movie been made from the point of view of being a stand alone film, it might have had a little more wiggle room. Is it weird that I want to say it had no flavour?
My Bloody Valentines 3D, I have to say, I walked into this one with very low hopes. It's a remake from the mid-2000's, which I have found to be some of the least impressive sub-genre of any movie. Specially horror. But, it quickly changed my mind. And I think that has more to do with the two lead male actors having been staples in the sci-fi and horror genres at the time. The characters played by Jensen Ackles and Kerr Smith, have chemistry on screen. They really seem to come across as being different ends of the same coin. Both played their characters as victims for half the movie before giving you reasons to fear them both. This is a duo I would happily sit down and watch in another movie or show.
I'll be back periodically throughout the rest of the Hallowe'en Season with more challenge updates.
