Hallowe'en 2023 Day 24- Giallo Horror and Canadian

It's Day 297 of my One Movie a Day for 2023, and Day 24 of both my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project, as well as the 31 Days of Horror challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. Plus, I can't forget the 100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge I joined this year.

As always, this is the part where I talk a little too much about how for the last decade I have been doing a 13 Days of Hallowe'en project on my old social medias. It ran from 19th-31st of October and I usually did movie reviews, recipes and comedy skits. But this year, I'm just keeping it simple with everything on this site and my Letterboxd.

For my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en, today's mini theme is Canadian Horror. I decided to go with the 2006 remake of Black Christmas aka Black Xmas.

A sorority house is targeted by an escaped mental patient during the Christmas break. It's revealed that the house they are living in, was the childhood home of the escaped patient Billy. A storm leaves the group of house mates trapped, as Billy and his daughter begin their bloody spree.

Okay, so this is both a remake and a total reboot as we get an actual backstory to the killer; where as in the original movie from the 1970's, there was no reason. I have to admit, today's selection was a bit of a choice, given I just watched the other one yesterday. I also had a difficult time finding something in the Canadian category that I haven't already covered. This was a bit of a bending of the rules slightly, given it's actually a Canadian-American co-production. But, it was shot in Canada and it's a remake of a Canadian movie, so it counts.

This not only gives us a backstory, but doubles the killers. I can't help but think it pulled a little from the popularity of the Scream franchise on that idea.

Today's mini theme from the 31 Days of Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street, is Giallo. I picked Blood and Black Lace.

A fashion house becomes the target of a killer, as one by one the lead models are brutally murdered for a diary that can expose all the sins of each person connected to the fashion house.

I have to admit, this was not what I was expecting. I found this to be visually captivating, and the story was more of a who-done-it but with some gore to it. I was under the impression that this style of horror movie was the opposite. That it was going to be more of a gore fest and less story. I was pleased to discover that it had more substance than I originally thought.

Come back tomorrow to see what other tricks and treats are on the slab.
