Hallowe'en 2023 Day 22- Creepy Crawlies and Mummy

It's Day 295 of my One Movie a Day for 2023, and Day 22 for both my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project, as well as the 31 Days of Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. Plus, I joined the 100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge this year.

So, if you've been following along all month, you know this is the part where I tell you that over the last decade, I've done a 13 Days of Hallowe'en project on my various old social media, that ran from the 19th-31st of October, where I would do movie reviews, recipes and comedy skits. This year, I'm just keeping it simple doing what I'm doing on this site and my Letterboxd.

For my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project, today's mini theme is Mummy Movie. I picked Mummy Dearest.

After having a medical injury, a woman is left in a wheelchair, and having to move in with her daughter and daughter's boyfriend. His house is designed like an Egyptian tomb, which causes the woman to not trust the boyfriend. After a neighbour informs her about the last people who lived there, she begins to dig around and discovers the dark secrets that the house holds.

Okay, so this has a mummy. It has an abusive serial killer type, and it has a ghost. It's hard to pin down if this should really be considered a mummy movie or not? The plot does revolve around Egyptian mythology to a point, but the fact everything is done as a medical hallucination while the lead character is having wild panic attacks, it's hard to tell if she's seeing a ghost or not?

The story is there, but at times it just feels like it's trying to be too much. Almost as if it's trying to cover too many genres at once. She uses Reiki to read the boyfriend's memories, which is all done again like a hallucination.

The mini theme for today for the 31 Days of Horror being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street is Creepy Crawlies. I picked The Craft.

We follow Sarah as she begins a new school. On her first day, she meets this group of three girls, Nancy, Bonnie and Rachel, who are witches. They discover now that Sarah has joined the coven, they have real powers that can affect things on a massive scale. When a friend dies because of a spell gone wrong, Nancy, Bonnie and Rachel begin to use their powers against Sarah.

This is a classic. Why did I pick this movie for creepy crawlies day? Because of the big scene near the end of the movie, that has the house over run by snakes and bugs. It's a bit of a disturbing scene. It shows just how far the one character is willing to go to have control over everyone. It's mentioned at the beginning of the movie, that Sarah is terrified of snakes and bugs. This fear is then used against her later on to control her emotions, causing her to have a panic attack. It's then used against Nancy, as karma once Sarah manages to conquer her own fears.

Come back tomorrow to see what tricks and treats I have on the slab.
