It's Day 289 of my One Movie a Day for 2023, and Day 16 for both my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en project as well as 31 Days of Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. Don't forget, I am also taking part in the 100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge this year.
This is the part where I've been telling you guys about how over the last decade I've been doing my 13 Days of Hallowe'en project on my old social medias, that ran from the 19th-31st of October and where I would do movie reviews, recipes and comedy skits. This year, I'm just keeping it contained to this site and my Letterboxd.
My mini challenge for today is Slasher. I decided to go with Seed of Chucky.
We follow a new character Glen, who has just discovered he's the child of Chucky and Tiff. He searches them out by arriving in Hollywood, having seen their lifeless forms on a tv show, unaware that they are no longer themselves. Glen, having been born a doll, had ended up in a circus as an attraction. When he arrives in Hollywood, he brings his parents back to life and they promptly kidnap Jennifer Tilly, with the intentions of transferring Tiff into her body and impregnating her so that Glen can be human.
It's a far out of the box movie plot, that somehow actually works and works to perfection. I believe it comes down to the fact Jennifer Tilly is carrying this movie as two different characters. As the franchise progresses, she becomes almost the backbone of it than even Brad Dourif who has done the voice of Chucky for nearly forty years.
I love the absurdity of it. The tongue in cheekness of having the lead voice actor stalking her real life self. The idea that these two possessed dolls gave birth to a living doll, who by all rights is as human as any other human.
The topic of a split personality in serial killers is nothing new, and making Glen a trans gendered character later to be known as both Glen and Glenda; was considered extremely shocking at the time this movie was made. It's since become a icon in itself for handling the topic.
The mini challenge for today for the 31DayHorrorChallenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street, is First Time Watch. I settled on the xmas horror Better Watch Out.
A teenaged boy has decided that he's in love with his babysitter and is planning to make his big move. Over hearing that she's leaving town for college, he creates a plan with his best friend in order to scare her into needing his help, hoping she'll fall in love with him. When she figures out what he's done, she tells him she's leaving. The boy then becomes violent, going on a rampage killing anyone who shows up at the house interrupting them.
So this is just Home Alone in reverse. Instead of the threat being robbers, the threat is the sweet looking kid. In fact, Home Alone is referenced a few times throughout this film. There are a few gruesome moments in this movie, such as when the babysitter's boyfriend gets killed, but this is just a really disturbing film. Anyone who has babysat really bratty kids, has had a moment like this stirring in their nightmares.
I'm not sure what is more troubling about this horror movie, and trust me it's a horror movie in the traditional sense; the ways in which the kid kills his victims or the fact he's able to get away with most of it? You're watching this thinking he has already terrorized his family to a point as the mother has even resorted to locking him in his bedroom at night.
This movie deals with obsession, mental illness and psychopathic personalities.
Come back tomorrow to see what new tricks and treats are on the slab.
