It's day 287 of the year and main project, which means we are on Day 14 of the 31 Days of Hallowe'en challenge and the #31DayHorrorChallenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street.
Today, both my 31 Day Hallowe'en challenge and their 31 Days of Horror challenge managed to fall in line, where I was able to use the same movie for both categories. For my own 31 Days, the theme was Book To Film. The prompt for the 31 Day Horror Challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street is Dee Wallace. I decided to watch The Howling.
After a reporter is attacked, her and her husband decide to go to a retreat on the advice of her therapist. They arrive on the night of a full moon and the locals are having a party. Still feeling uneasy about the man who attacked her, the reporter is unable to sleep. Her husband on the other hand is fitting in with the locals much better than she is. After going hunting with a group of the men, her husband is seduced by one of the women at the retreat. Feeling alone, the reporter calls and invites her co-workers to join her. The co-worker is killed after arriving, and we learn the man who had attacked the reporter is a member of a werewolf pack.
This is one of the cult classic werewolf movies from the 80's. The transformations in this range from super cheesy to creepy and scary. This film, does have some plot holes, but they are forgivable given the short run time and how much this movie manages to fit in. I know the underbelly of this story is about abuse and how the news takes every tragedy and glorifies it; but it deals with these topics fairly well.
