2025 Did the Movie Make Me Do It? part 14

January 1st 2025. A brand new year, and a brand new set of movie challenges. I'm once again doing the One Movie A Day challenge on my Letterboxd if you want to follow along with the daily movie list. Right off the bat, I was going to make this part one for 2025, but I thought that might confuse people. Even thought this is technically a new challenge year, it's the same series so I decided to continue on and call this part 14.

The idea of this is the same. On January 1st watch a movie take notes and see how much it matches my real life over the course of the 2025 calendar year.

Okay, so what movie did I pick for my first watch on January 1st 2025?....

The 1988 comedy-horror Elvira Mistress of the Dark. I've actually talked about this movie previously on this site as part of the Hallowe'en /Horror movie challenges I've done. As well, for anyone who followed any of my older blogs or social media, you know I've done recipes inspired by this movie over a decade a go. ( a taco casserole based on her Adraka Kozorol, a no bake cheesecake based on the picnic scene's Tick-Tac-Pie and giant cheeseballs based on a line about a sleaze ball)

For anyone who has not seen this cult classic the plot is simple. Elvira quits her job and needs to raise money in order to book a show in Vegas. She finds out that her Aunt has died, and she needs to go to a small town for the reading of the will. She arrives and right off the bat, upsets the townspeople who torment her the few weeks she's there. One of whom happens to be her Uncle. He's actually a very powerful witch and views her as a threat. She manages to outsmart not just him, but everyone who's bullied her and get the money for her show.

So, once again I'm going to see how much of this movie's plot fits with my own life over the course of 2025. Which means, every month, I'll come in here and give a bit of an update. As well, I'm trying to uncover if the movie does parallel my life, and is it natural synchronicity? Power of suggestion? Or something else?

With 2024's movie pick, Rob Zombie's The Munsters, I found the movie was popping up all around me after about halfway through the year. It was heavily played for part of the year on Crave television here in my area, reviews for it seemed to be recommended to me on a daily basis on Youtube. And every time I went to Sunrise Records here in town, there would be a copy for sale on the display rack along with a few other Rob Zombie movies/cds.

That's synchronicity. It was also a newer movie, having been released in 2022. It will be interesting to see if anything like that happens in 2025 with Elvira Mistress of the Dark, given it was released in 1988.

And as I write this, I just realized how much drama the character actually goes through in the film. Let's hope it doesn't go too much down that path. I'll be back next month with the first update.
