It's day 303 of the year and project, which means we are on Day 29 of the 31 Days of Hallowe'en challenges. As usual, I'm starting off with my own 31 Days of Hallowe'en; I talked about that last August. Today's mini challenge is Canadian Horror. I picked The Lighthouse.
When two men are hired to man the lighthouse on a very remote island for a month, they get trapped by a storm. Eventually, they find themselves wondering what's real and what's not?
This had The Shining vibes written all over it. There is even a scene where the older male character is running through the night with an axe and a bad leg in the exact same way as the Jack Nicholson character in the Shining does. I've said this more than a few times, but isolation horror is one of the best sub-genres. Everyone can relate to it and the fears it can induce. This is an alcohol fueled nightmare, that leaves you guessing at the truth as much as it does the characters. I kept thinking this was going to turn into an H.P. Lovecraft story, but it didn't. It hinted at it, but at the same time, it hints at a few different mythos.
And the 31 Days of Horror challenge being hosted by Nightmare on Film Street. Their theme today was Frankenstein. I picked The Revenge of Frankenstein .
After the failure of his last creation, Dr Victor Frankenstein changes his name and starts over again a few years later. Things are going a lot smoother, that is until the creature shows signs of a split personality.
I did not care for this one. It started off promising, but about midway, it felt rushed and messy. Like it was trying to put too much into the time frame. This is another movie that was done with a slight bit of isolation horror. I don't think that was on purpose, but it ends up that way, as everything happens within one building. There was just something missing with this one for me. Again, to me it just felt like they were trying too hard to turn it into a Jekyll and Hyde story with the way the creature would react.
Don't forget to check out my daily Letterboxd lists, as I am doing a few movie challenges right now. Including the #100HorrorMoviesIn92Days
Come back tomorrow to see what's on the slab.
