Every year come October, the monsters come out to play. We see images of vampires, werewolves and witches splashed across anything and everything. And everyone has their favourite genre film they watch over and over each year. Here are a handful of vampire movies I would add to any playlist for the October movie marathons.
1. Interview with the Vampire
Follow Lestat, Louis and Claudia as they move their way through nearly 100 years of love, lust and tragedy. Based on the 1976 novel of the same name, this action drama managed to change the face of fangs forever.
2. The Lost Boys the 1987 classic horror thriller, manages to skillfully mix elements of Dracula with Peter Pan. We follow a family who move to a new city and find themselves as the object of desire by a family of vampires.
3. Hotel Transylvania the 2012 animated film about Dracula, his daughter and their friends, is a nice light snack to sink your teeth into. Set in a hotel for monsters, Drac finds himself facing his fears of humans when one happens to wander in the front door on the eve of a great party.
4. Fright Night this 1985 cult classic is the perfect blend of old horror and modern. Charley and his friends find themselves battling the new neighbour who just happens to be a centuries old vampire.
5. Blade In this 1998 comic book movie, we follow Blade who is a half-vampire (dhampir) as he battles the head of the biggest vampire family. Not only was this a fresh take on the theme of vampires, but it was the first major Marvel movie.
6. From Dusk Till Dawn Half crime drama half western, this 1996 film broke down the genres but doubled up on the gore. It's the first installment of the franchise that sees the Gecko brothers Seth and Richie make their way into Mexico where they are attacked by vampires.
7. Dracula 1931 The original film that made vampires swoonable. Based on the novel by Bram Stoker, this version with Bela Lugosi is still a classic lesson in atmosphere
8. Buffy The Vampire Slayer The original 1992 dark comedy that started it all. Buffy is valley girl perfection who learns she's been reincarnated to kill the head vampire and stop his minons from taking over the world.
9. Vampire's Kiss the 1988 dark comedy-drama follows Nicholas Cage's character of Peter Loew who is an overworked under paid executive who believes he's been bitten by a vampire and slowly turning into one. It by design leaves you wondering if he is experiencing what he thinks he is or if his having a breakdown.
10. Bram Stoker's Dracula the now classic 1992 version of Dracula starring Gary Oldman, that pulls you into the story with rich details of texture, was one of the first to mix in elements from the real life Vlad the Impaler, whom Stoker based parts of the novel 's identity on.
This is just a taste of some of the more mainstream vampiric titles. All guaranteed to have you saying fangs for the memories.
