Frankenstein: The Ultimate Gothic Sci-Fi Novel

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

On January 1st 1818, Mary Shelley published what would become one of the two most recognized stories. 'Frankenstein or The Modern Promethius' turns 205 today. The gothic novel has helped to set a standard in horror. But, it's chilling atmosphere is even more influential than that. It's dive into what was the most current technology at that time, helped to launch what would be the heart of science. Both in fiction and reality.

The story follows Victor Frankenstein as he deals with the grief of loosing his family members, by driving himself to obsession with the idea of creating a new form of human. Someone strong enough to survive any death. The novel is told through the eyes of three characters. Victor, the creation and the captain of a ship. Readers are meant to sympathize with none of the main characters. Yet, society seems to have a grand connection to the creation.

The story itself is famous for having been first told as a ghost story by Mary Shelley as a parlour game, on a weekend spent with Lord Byron and John Polidori. Polidori would also write the vampire novel 'The Vampyre' during that weekend.
